According to the AFP, the US was protecting the now-infamous Radovan Karadzic, until he broke whatever deal the government had set with him: "The US peace negotiator in Bosnia, Richard Holbrooke, had promised he would avoid trial if he withdrew from public life... Holbrooke has insisted that no deal with Karadzic existed."
