Trevanian. A writer with only one name is always intriguing, but his stuff is really, really good. (Turns out, according to the article in Men's Journal that prompted this post, that Trevanian was a pseudonym protectively adopted by a University of Texas professor named Rodney Whittaker, who was afraid his publishing The Eiger Sanction would get him into trouble at school.)
