It’s been a good year for Elon Musk (photo). His company, Tesla, is having a breakout season. He unveiled his idea for a potentially game-changing transportation system. And he’s being discussed as the world’s “greatest living inventor.” Now, he’s giving advice to world leaders.Rico says the Irish Development Authority has done a great job of getting companies to move there (including Apple, which is why Rico got to go there so many times and meet such great people); maybe they can figure out a way to get engineers to graduate and stay there...
As Bloomberg reports in an article by Mark Millan, Musk was recently on a panel with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, during which Kenny asked Musk what he would do if he were the leader of Ireland. Musk’s idea: free schooling for engineers.
Musk suggested Ireland should help midsize companies acquire funding and to somehow cultivate a high concentration of talent. Then, the Tesla Motors and Space Exploration Technologies co-founder paused, and said he should avoid speaking in “platitudes”.
“For a technology company, you need engineers,” Musk said. “Maybe engineering could be tuition-free or something like that.” One caveat is that 'they’ve got to stay in Ireland'.
That might be a difficult proposition for a country which was one of the worst hit by the Great Recession. But with the economy slowly turning around, maybe it’s time to start considering the idea.
