In 1979, the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture was The Deer Hunter.Rico says he remembers it, a touch dimly at this remove, but while it was extremely well done (hey, with DeNiro and Walken and Streep in it, how bad could it be?), Cimino's movie was ultimately disappointing.
He thought he was portraying the Vietnam experience, but it was more the Hollywood reflection of that experience, rather than the real thing.
Still, depressing enough to stand in for Vietnam, without having to actually have been there...
