On 23 February 1945, Joe Rosenthal snapped his famous photo of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima. For the children among us, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War; three of the six men in his photo were killed after raising the flag. To put it into perspective, much hoohah is currently being made over our losing slightly less than 5,000 dead in the war in Iraq; in the month-long campaign to take Iwo Jima, we lost almost seven thousand dead and nearly twenty thousand wounded.Rico says we've lost our stomach for sacrifice; 7,000 dead in a month? Television reporters would be screaming...
