The Wall Street Journal has an article by Byron Tau about the Secret Service and gubs:

 

Guns will not be permitted at the Republican National Convention this summer in Cleveland, Ohio, the Secret Service said in response to a petition circulated by gun rights activists. Under Federal law, the Secret Service may ban firearms from sites visited by people under its protection, including in so-called “open-carry states” such as Ohio, Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said. Leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is under the agency’s protection. “Only authorized law enforcement personnel working in conjunction with the Secret Service for a particular event may carry a firearm inside of the protected site,” he said. “Individuals determined to be carrying firearms will not be allowed past a predetermined outer perimeter checkpoint, regardless of whether or not they possess a ticket to the event.”
A petition on the website change.org called on the arena hosting the convention, the state of Ohio, and the Republican National Committee to allow attendees to the convention to carry weapons inside, citing the Republican Party’s strong support for gun rights.
In the state of Ohio, residents are, for the most part, permitted to carry firearms openly, but the Quicken Loans Arena, where many convention events will be held, bars firearms and other weapons.
The petition, which has drawn nearly fifty thousand signatures, calls the convention gun ban “a direct affront to the Second Amendment” that “puts all attendees at risk. By forcing attendees to leave their firearms at home, the RNC and Quicken Loans Arena are putting tens of thousands of people at risk, both inside and outside of the convention site,” the petition reads.
The Republican convention will be held from 18 July to 21 July, 2016.
