Well, there's good news and bad. The Robot Island Project is coming along pretty good, and 3DStudioMax is soldiering for me pretty well. The 3DMax class that I was going to take was cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, but I found someone who is willing to take me on as a private student.
Here are two 'Bots. The one (top) with the hat is a foreman/top sergeant-type Bot. The red one (bottom) is an Ordnance Installer Bot. I built the Sergeant first, then continued to the Ammo Bot. I got to a sticking point applying the texture on the cannon shells, and tried a work-around by highlighting the shell, copying it, opening a new 3DMax doc, and pasting it in. To my surprise, it copied over not just the shell, but both Bots. I textured the shell, finished the Ammo Bot, saved the document and then decided to delete the Sergeant, so I'd have two documents with two models, one in each. To my horror, when I went back to the original, the Sergeant was gone from there, too. No way to recover it, so now I have two documents with an Ammo Bot in both.
The ameliorating news is that it won't take long to re-build the Sergeant. Once all the design decisions have been made, re-tracing ones steps usually doesn't take too long.
