I’m sure the iPhone 5, or whatever it will be called, is going to be impressive. But you know what other phones are impressive? The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.
It looks like both of them are getting discounted as retailers get ready for the rumored announcement of Apple’s new iPhone in September.
According to AllThingsD, Target is now offering the iPhone 4S on Verizon and AT&T for $179 with a two-year contract. Sprint is selling the phone for even less: $149 with a two-year contract.
Best Buy is offering the iPhone 4 for only $49 with a two-year contract. Needless to say, that’s a steal. Yes, some people will be compelled to spring for the next iPhone’s reportedly bigger screen and rumored 4G connection, but for most casual users the iPhone 4 may be more than powerful enough to meet their texting and browsing needs.
And according to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is quietly telling Apple Store employees to offer the same discounts on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S to customers who cite the discounts offered by other retailers. Those discounts are not currently advertised anywhere on Apple’s website.
The new iPhone and smaller iPad are rumored to be announced on 12 September.
Rico says that now he won't get as much from his friend Kelley for his current iPhone, alas, but he can't buy an iPhone 5 until December, anyway... (And he'll be saving up for the smaller iPad, too; Jared Newman has a Time article about why it'll mean doom for those other tablets out there.)
