History for the day
On 21 August 1858, Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, has his first debate with Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, in Ottawa, Illinois. The debate, the first of seven in the race for the Illinois seat in the US Senate, was about slavery, with Lincoln contending it to be a 'monstrous injustice', and Douglas saying it's a matter for each state to determine. Douglas was elected, but Lincoln ends up defeating him for the Presidency in 1860.
