Rico says he's been using the phrase 'index of deflection' for quite some time to describe his need to touch his environment (anything; a wall, a chair, a railing) in order to sense where he is in space. Try walking with your eyes closed (and/or seriously drunk) and you'll understand the problem. However, a Google search turned up very few (mostly bad) definitions for what Rico thought was a common phrase. The only really good one was by Jeff Cooper, about properly pointing a handgun; likely that was the one that'd stuck in Rico's head all these years.
