Sanjusangen-do













One of the places that Rico will always remember is the Sanjusangen-do (the hall of Thirty-Three Bays) in Kyoto, Japan, with its one-thousand-and-one gold-leafed statues of the Kannon Bodhisattva. (There's one big one in the middle, and five hundred on either side. And, yes, it's just as fucking impressive in reality as it looks in the pictures, if not more so.) They used to hold archery competitions on the porch; the trick was to shoot its length (390 feet) without hitting the ceiling or the wall or the floor:
