War History Online has an article and video (above) about some old hardware found in the desert in Iraq:
Imagine yourself a modern day soldier in Iraq fighting insurgents when, all of a sudden, you find yourself faced with tanks that seem to come straight out of Call of Duty. You are faced with the same weapons your grandfathers used in the Second World War when they were fighting the Germans or the Japanese.Rico says he can hear museum directors around the world drooling...
In the video is an amazing collection of pictures of Allied armor. M4 Shermans, Churchills, M24 Chaffees, M36 Jacksons, Crusaders, you name it, they found it in Iraq.
Not only were these vintage tanks encountered, over seventy years after they were used, but scores of World War Two weapons from all countries were used by the insurgents, too: Lugers, Mausers, Garands, PPSH-41s, M1919 .30cal machine gun, the list seems endless.
While their longevity is a testament to the craftsmanship of those who manufactured these weapons, let us hope this is the last time they are encountered outside a museum. They have all earned their place in history. Let them stay there.
