This winter, so far, has not been very winter-like. Yes, we have had an occasional brief arctic intrusion, and snow has been a rare commodity. Temperatures were on the cold side as 2015 rang in. But, as we saw this weekend, we had yet another quick and wet milder turn around.
If you're wondering when we're going to get some serious usage out of that very fashionable winter coat, the answer is: "this week".
Not only are temperatures going to tumble into the teens, but snow will coat the region Tuesday morning. One to two inches of snow are expected to begin falling at about 9 am and eventually taper off in the early afternoon. As much as three inches could fall across western Chester County.
Tuesday's precipitation is part of a series of polar punches arriving in the region. The initial jab occurred Monday when temperatures dipped into the mid-thirties.
The drop in temperature will continue Tuesday all the way into the twenties.
But that's not it.
A bitterly cold air mass will strike on Wednesday into Thursday. The polar front will arrive during the day Wednesday, and it'll be in the teens by Wednesday evening. The big problem will be the wind speeds ramping up to 35 miles per hour.
Code Blue conditions will be issued by Wednesday evening for dangerous wind chills and the homeless should not be on the streets as the cold will be life threatening. Pets should only have short outdoor breaks.
We bottom out with the crux of the cold air on Thursday morning. Most of the region will see temperatures in the single digits and low teens. In the Poconos, the temperature will drop to zero.
