Nice to nasty

John Bolaris has his usually depressing forecast at Philly.com:

After a nice pop in temperatures yesterday, a polar front has descended and brought a tumble in temperatures. Readings bottomed out in the teens overnight into this morning. Don't be surprised if a few scattered flurries or even a snow shower or two come with the arrival of the polar influx. Wind-chill conditions fell to near zero overnight.
The only good news is that the winds will relax. But temperatures will still struggle to reach the freezing mark, even with plenty of sunshine through today.
That brings us to Sunday. There was a lot of talk earlier this week by weather heads about a push of much milder air by Sunday. And this did look to be the case about four to five days ago. But that began to change about three days ago in newer computer models, which indicated mild air would not be the case, even suggesting the possibility of a cold rain.
Not only are current models calling for cold rain, but we could see a wintry mix if the precipitation arrives early enough on Sunday. This would hold true in some inland locations, especially north of the Blue Route and Pennsylvania Turnpike, where folks could see a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain.
Overall, Sunday will be nasty with a cold northeasterly wind. Temperatures will be in the upper thirties in the city and lower forties along the coast. Shore areas have the best chance of receiving heavy rain.
The European model is still suggesting perhaps a brief changeover to some sleet or wet snow north and west of Philly before the system ends. It would be a minor event even if that scenario does come to fruition.
The next time frame to watch is 23 to 24 January 2014, when a possible coastal storm could contain enough potentially cold air to produce snow or problems from freezing. Computer models have been waffling on this. Some call for a nasty coastal storm; others for nothing at all as the system slips off the coast to the south. So this is just a heads-up as something to keep on your radar. There’s a low confidence in the outlook for now.
