History for the day

On 17 September 1862, Union forces hurled back a Confederate invasion of Maryland in the Civil War battle of Antietam.(known by the Confederacy as the battle of Sharpsburg). With over twenty-three thousand killed, wounded or captured, it remains the bloodiest day in US military history.
