On 7 April 1862, Union forces led by General Ulysses S. Grant defeated the Confederates at the battle of Shiloh, aka Pittsburg Landing, in Tennessee. (In the dubious distinction category, the eight battles with higher casualties than Shiloh were Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Court House, Antietam/Sharpsburg, the Wilderness, Second Bull Run/Manassas, and Stones River/Murfreesboro.)
