The Navy has used one of its four SSGNs in connection with operations in Somalia, a top Navy commander said Thursday. And then he said no more.

Instructions for torturing Pentagon reporters:
1. Bring in a four-star admiral (Naval Forces Europe commander Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, say) for a very rare sit-down with the Puzzle Palace hackoisie.
2. Have someone ask him a question about uses for the Navy’s guided-missile submarines, or SSGNs (or goomers, as opposed to boomers, as we tried, and failed, to get people to call them) in his European and African areas of operation.
3. Have Fitzgerald throw out a spicy tidbit like this: "I can’t talk about specifics, but let’s talk about what it’s got; it’s got the ability to carry a Special Operations task force, so it can deploy divers, submersibles, and those kind of things. It’s got to up to 154 Tomahawk missiles in it. It’s got a long endurance capability; it’s a nuclear submarine, so it can sit off the coast for a long period of time. We have used it down in the Somali basin. It’s proven to be a very effective platform. I can’t go into specific operations. Sorry."
