Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York was overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate as President Obama’s secretary of state on Wednesday. The vote on Senator Clinton, who was waiting for confirmation before resigning her seat, was 94 to 2. (She did not vote.) When the result was announced, there was a hearty round of applause in the chamber.Rico says notice the fine political hand of the Clintons at work: "Senator Clinton waited for confirmation before resigning her seat". But maybe now they can appoint Caroline Kennedy and make up for this gaffe. (Nah, she bailed, the bitch...)
The only senators opposing the nomination were David Vitter of Louisiana and Jim DeMint of South Carolina, both Republicans. Mr. Vitter was the only member of the Foreign Relations Committee to oppose her last week, when she won the panel’s endorsement, sixteen to one. Mr. Vitter has asserted that former President Bill Clinton’s fund-raising activities create too many possible conflicts of interest. Senator Clinton’s confirmation, which was never in doubt, was a consolation of sorts for the Obama White House. The action came not long after a Senate committee vote on the nomination of Eric H. Holder Jr. to be attorney general was delayed for a week after Republicans insisted they needed more time to question him.
