This book, World Without End by Ken Follett, is one of the latter.
Rico says he tried but, at over a thousand pages, there just wasn't enough fire in the story to hold him past the first hundred... (Though he'd read, and liked, The Pillars of the Earth, the prequel to this one, too.)
