Misdirection

Stephen Becker, a writer that Rico greatly admires, threw out what appeared to be a clue in Covenant with Death:
"I have not even told you what state we were part of, because it did not matter; think of a small and sunny state between New Mexico and Arizona."

Rico says he had to check, just to be sure, but there is no state, small and sunny or otherwise, between Arizona and New Mexico...
