Alamo artifacts back in Texas

Phil Collins recently brought his Alamo artifact collection back to its original San Antonio, Texas home, a site the 63-year-old has been fascinated by since he was young.
The singer said he became fascinated by the historical site ever since he saw the 1955 film Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier as a child in London, England, according to Reuters. The British rocker has since amassed a large collection of artifacts from the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, when Mexican troops attacked the Alamo Mission, a chapel built to spread Christianity to those living in the region. The Alamo’s defenders sought revenge, and later defeated the Mexican Army to establish the Republic of Texas, which would be later become a US state.
Collins’ collection will be housed temporarily at a building near the Alamo before they are moved into a hundred-million-dollar museum called the Phil Alamo Collins Collection.
“This completes the journey for me,” Collins told Reuters. “These artifacts are coming home.” The artifacts include a leather pouch that Davy Crockett, who died at the Alamo, brought from his home state of Tennessee to Texas during the Texas Revolution. Collins also owned one of only four remaining rifles that were owned by Crockett, and an original Bowie knife owned by Jim Bowie during the Battle of the Alamo, where he also died.

"When I got older and became successful, I decided to spend my money on original items from the Alamo, rather than on Ferraris," Collins told a news conference in San Antonio. He said a handful of items will be kept in his home in Switzerland, because his nine-year-old son has also become fascinated with the Alamo.
Collins said he was in San Antonio two years ago, looking for a museum to house his collection, when the Texas General Land Office, which had just taken over management of the Alamo, suggested he donate them directly to the Alamo.
"God bless you, Phil Collins," Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said as he accepted the donation.
The Alamo, with its distinctive façade, located in downtown San Antonio, is the largest tourist attraction in Texas, attracting about two-and-a-half million visitors a year.
A measure is set to be introduced in the Texas legislature when it meets in January of 2015 to declare Collins to be an "Honorary Texan," he added.
Collins first became known as drummer and lead vocalist for the rock group Genesis, later winning global fame as a soloist along with numerous awards, including some for movie sound-tracks.
