Off North Carolina's Ocracoke Inlet, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is killed during battle with a British Royal Navy force commissioned by the Virginia commonwealth; his severed head is later attached to the mast of a sloop for all to see. The violent demise of the notorious pirate, who plagued shipping routes from the Caribbean to the North Atlantic Coast, would etch his name in the annals of history and legend.
