Hello, Dalai

An 'unprecedented' conference took place in Dharmsala, India (far from the madness in Bombay, fortunately), where the Tibetan exiles met to deal with the eventual death of the Dalai Lama (top photo). There's a complex reincarnation theory at work, and they fear China may exploit the years while the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation is growing up to try to appoint its own rival candidate, as already happened with the Panchen Lama. A plan under discussion is whether the Dalai Lama should appoint a regent to take charge after his death, such as the charismatic young Karmapa Lama (bottom photo); onlookers say the Dalai Lama appears to be grooming the younger lama for this role. In his address to the exiled Tibetans, the Dalai Lama warned that they would need to tread with extreme care and prudence in the next 20 years, as they were in "great danger".
