An industrial chemical blamed for the kidney failure of hundreds of infants in China was discovered in sweets in four Connecticut stores this week.
Days after contaminated White Rabbit Creamy Candy was found in California, Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has found candy on several store shelves in the state that is contaminated with melamine which is used in plastics manufacturing. Laboratory tests on the candy by the Connecticut Agriculture Experiment State Laboratory have confirmed that the candy contains melamine, which has been associated recently with contaminated infant formula and other milk protein-containing products in China.
The distributor of the candy, Queensway Foods Company Inc., of Burlingame, California, is recalling White Rabbit. The department is warning people not to eat the White Rabbit Creamy Candy, which was imported from China and sold primarily at Asian markets. The contamination has been blamed for the deaths of four children and kidney ailments among 54,000 others.
