Another senseless murder

The Washington Post has an article by Susan Hogan and Sarah Larimer about the murder of a popular star:

Singer Christina Grimmie, a former finalist on NBC’s The Voice, died early Saturday, hours after a gunman’s attack at a Florida concert venue, according to Orlando police. Grimmie, 22, performed Friday evening at Orlando’s Plaza Live venue, followed by the band Before You Exit. The show ended at around 2200, and Grimmie and members of the band lingered to sign autographs and sell merchandise, according to an Orlando police news release.
Authorities received a call about gunshots at about 2200, the release stated. The suspect “walked toward Christina and shot her”, the police said in a Twitter message. “Christina’s brother tackled the suspect”, who then shot and killed himself, authorities said.
The shooter was armed with handguns and a hunting knife, authorities wrote on Twitter. His name has not yet been released.
“The suspect traveled to Orlando, apparently to commit this crime,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a news conference. “And then he had plans to travel back to where he came from.”
Nothing in the investigation has suggested that the gunman, who came from another city in Florida, personally knew Grimmie, Mina said. “No, there’s no indication that he knew her,” Mina said. “We’re looking into that and trying to find a motive for the crime.”
Josh Call, who was working outside the concert venue, told the Orlando Sentinel he heard a series of rapid shots. “It was quick like pow, pow, pow, pow,” he told the newspaper.
The venue does have unarmed security guards, who check bags and purses when people enter, Mina said. About a hundred people were still at the venue at the time of the shooting, he said.
“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord,” a publicist for Grimmie said in an email. “She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive her wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”
Earlier Friday, Grimmie posted a message on Twitter inviting fans to her concert: “Please come out,” she said.
Grimmie, a New Jersey native, finished in third place during season six of The Voice. Her YouTube page has more than three million subscribers.
Her mentor on the NBC show was Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, who posted a photo of himself with Grimmie on Instagram after the shooting, but before her death.
“Can’t believe this,” another Voice coach, Blake Shelton, wrote on Twitter.
Country singer Jake Worthington, who was a Voice finalist with Grimmie, expressed outrage after the shooting, saying he wanted to hurt the gunman.
Christina was such a loving, caring, beautiful person,” the band Before You Exit wrote on Twitter, adding: “We are so saddened by her passing, and completely heartbroken.”

Rico says some crimes have no sense to them... (But Before You Exit is just a little too obvious...)
