The New York Times has an article by Henry Fountain entitled Methane Is Discovered Seeping From Seafloor Off East Coast:

Scientists said the discovery, off the East Coast of the United States, where the continental shelf meets the deeper Atlantic Ocean, was unexpected, but had been going on for at least a thousand years.
