Rico says a guy in Vernal, Utah succeeded in getting arrested for disorderly conduct, and perhaps fined as much as $140, for paying a disputed medical bill for $25 with 2,500 pennies...
Rico's not sure what else the guy did (probably argued with the clerk or. worse yet, threatened her) to get arrested, but he wasn't when he did it, back in the 1970s when he was at Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh, and got a 'pay this bill immediately' (even though they were current) notice from the fucking Phone Company. (Remember TPC from The President's Analyst? There's a reason for that...) Seems they weren't impressed with the fact that we'd been current all year; seems there was a habit among dead-beat college students to run up their bill and then skip town, so they wanted their money now. They got it, $150, all in pennies (which are heavy). Months later, when Rico called to turn off the phones for the summer, the guy on the other end started laughing when he pulled up our account: "So you're the penny kids!" Such is fame... (But there is a law, to prevent just this sort of thing, that doesn't require a business to accept anything over about ten bucks in coinage. They were, in Rico's case, kind enough to take it, mostly because he walked away and left them on the counter.)
