Why we pay other people to do it

Firefighters understand that low wages and poor working conditions will be their lot going into the job, just like the Marine Corps. They aren’t the primary reasons we choose this profession. Many firefighters would be just as successful outside the job. Many give up other professions before joining the fire service. There’s an old saying that if you get enough firefighters and beer in one spot you could build or tear down a house. It’s true. Many of us join for the (necessary) challenge that protecting a city presents. Firefighters have always traded off economic benefits for a certain amount of job security. There will always be a need for emergency services but, now that the bureaucrats and politicians are closing companies down, we have lost that small bit of security.
