Now it's our fault, as usual

The LA Times and the AP say the Pakistanis are pissed over losing eleven infantrymen in an apparent airstrike in support of our Afghani allies: "The Pakistani army said 11 members of the Mohmand Rifles, including a major, were killed in the airstrike in the rugged tribal region bordering Afghanistan's Kunar province. The Mohmand Rifles is a unit of the Frontier Corps, a paramilitary force deployed to maintain security in the western tribal areas, which are riddled with militant hide-outs. According to U.S. military officials in Washington and Afghanistan, a U.S.-led patrol that had moved into Kunar province as part of an anti- insurgent offensive came under small-arms fire just 200 yards from the Pakistani border. One official said the attackers fled into Pakistan when U.S. soldiers opened fire to defend themselves... Pakistani sources said the U.S. forces were working with the Afghan army when the fighting broke out, and accused Afghan troops of crossing into Pakistan to set up a checkpoint.
To support its version, the coalition on Thursday took the unusual step of releasing excerpts of a video shot by a surveillance drone circling above the mountainous battle zone. The grainy, monochrome images show about a half-dozen men firing small arms and rocket-propelled grenades from a ridge at coalition troops off-camera in the valley below. According to the voiceover in the video, the ridge is in Afghanistan's Kunar province, about 200 yards from the Pakistan border and close to the Gorparai checkpoint. Neither the checkpoint nor any other structures are visible in the video excerpts... The video shows the "anti-Afghan militants" moving to a position identified as inside Pakistan and the impact of a bomb which the voiceover says killed two of them. The survivors then fled into a ravine, where three more bombs were dropped, nearly three hours after the clash began. The voiceover said all the militants were killed. One of the bombs fell off screen, and U.S. officials said about a dozen bombs were dropped in all.

Rico says he wonders why anyone is surprised that the area is a major clusterfuck...
