According to this article, some young man who loves his iPhone jumped down onto the subway tracks in New York City to retrieve it: "New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority said that passengers who drop a device should ask an attendant for help, rather than risking death."
Rico says that risking death for your iPhone is excessive, but he gets it why you'd be tempted... (It was also 3am, so there probably weren't a lot of on-coming trains.)
