Lindsay Lowe has an article about the upcoming anti-NRA movie in Parade magazine:

Meryl Streep (photo, left) and producer Harvey Weinstein (photo, right) will take aim at the National Rifle Association in an upcoming movie, Deadline reports.
The film, called The Senator’s Wife, will be a behind-the-scenes account of how the NRA used its political influence to defeat legislation that would have required gun sellers to conduct more background checks.
“I shouldn’t say this. I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this issue head on and they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them,” Weinstein said in a recent interview with Howard Stern. “I think the NRA is a disaster area,” he added. “I don’t think we need guns in this country.”
He said the film will be a “big movie like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” which he hopes will help spark a new national conversation about gun control. “I think we can do something,” he told Stern.
Weinstein, one of Hollywood’s most influential producers, has never been shy about his political affiliations; he’s an avid Obama supporter (he helped raise over a half million dollars during the president’s re-election campaign), and he has long been outspoken about the issue of gun control in the US, as well as the role gun violence should play in movies.
“I think, as filmmakers, we should sit down— the Martin Scorseses, the Quentin Tarantinos, and hopefully all of us who deal in violence in movies— and discuss our role in that,” he told the Huffington Post in 2012.
He added that in light of the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, which had taken place the previous week, he struggled to come to terms with his involvement in producing very violent movies (he has produced all of Quentin Tarantino’s notoriously bloody films). “It’s a question that I wrestle with all the time,” he said. “I’ve been involved with violent movies, and then I’ve also said at a certain point, ‘I can’t take it anymore. Please cut it.’ You know, you’ve got to respect the filmmaker, and it’s a really tough issue. My heart goes out to those kids and those families.”
