Dan Gross has an article at Philly.com about how Leonardo DiCaprio learned to saw open a human skull (photo) with 1850's medical equipment for a scene in Django Unchained:

By watching a video by Mutter Museum (at 19 South 22nd in Philadelphia) curator Anna Dhody. The museum says Dhody received a request from the propmaster on the Quentin Tarantino film for instructions on how to properly saw a skull and decided it best to show, rather than tell.
