Shoulda thought harder, the moron

Rico says it's another case of 'how the mighty have fallen', but Danny Hakim relates the details in The New York Times:

Eliot Spitzer, the former governor, said during an interview on NBC’s Today that when he was patronizing prostitutes it occurred to him that he would inevitably get caught, but that the worry was not enough to deter him. “It crossed my mind, but like many things in life, you ignore the obvious at a certain moment because you simply don’t want to confront it,” Mr. Spitzer told Matt Lauer during the live interview.
A little more than a year after his resignation, Mr. Spitzer told Mr. Lauer that he was addressing his personal “gremlins” and trying to move on with his life. “There are no excuses,” he added. “I have tried to address these gremlins and confront them. What I did was an egregious violation of trust to my family, to my colleagues, and the state, and I’ve paid a price and appropriately so.”
Mr. Lauer noted that because Mr. Spitzer was not prosecuted, many details were not known. “I just wonder if you could give me some ballpark, some estimation, of how long this went on and how frequently this went on?” he asked.
“Not frequently, not long in the grand context of my life,” Mr. Spitzer replied. “It was an egregious violation of behavior that I fell into for many reasons, but none of them are an excuse or justifiable.”
Mr. Spitzer is now a columnist for the online magazine Slate, and most of the interview focused on his views on the financial crisis. Regarding the American International Group and other recipients of federal bailout funds, he said, “We should give them enough liquidity so they don’t drag down the entire economy, then we should break them up so there’s genuine competition, and the next time around they’re not too big to fail.”
Mr. Lauer closed by asking Mr. Spitzer if he had ever asked “what if,” adding, “you were a person with the knowledge and the position to perhaps do something about this.”
Mr. Spitzer said that “not to be able to participate is painful”, adding, “the greater pain is for my family, but, of course, I do say that to myself.”
