A Michigan man who police say wanted to end the Republican National Convention 'with a bang' has been charged with illegally possessing Molotov cocktails that he allegedly intended to use in St. Paul, Minnesota, the site of the GOP convention.
Documents indicate the FBI had been tracking DePalma since February, when he attended a convention known as CrimeThinc in Waldo, Wisconsin. DePalma allegedly was heard talking about wanting to make “some bombs” and “blow shit up” at the Republican convention.
According to the court documents, DePalma accessed information at a library on 18 August on a specific type of Molotov cocktail that burns hotter than usual and sticks to its targets. He allegedly planned to use the incendiary devices to sabotage the electrical system at the Xcel Energy Center, where the convention is being held, and then he allegedly planned to attack responding police officers. The documents say DePalma had discussed his plans with an undercover FBI informant, and he is quoted as saying, “I will light one of those pigs on fire.”
