Fails to get the nomination for a seat in the House.
Wins the primary for a seat in the Senate.
Delivers the keynote address at the Democratic convention.
Wins a seat in the Senate from Illinois.
Announces that he's running for the White House in Springfield, Illinois.

Wins a second race for the Illinois state house of representatives.

Wins a fourth term in the Illinois state house of representatives.
Wins election to the US House of Representatives from Illinois.
Runs for the US Senate from Illinois and loses.
Wins the popular vote in the next election but loses to his opponent.
