Movie reviews for the week

Saw a bunch of videos while I was in Florida. Here are capsule reviews:
War. You would think, with Jet Li and Jason Statham in the starring roles, that this would be a good movie. You'd be wrong. It was so bad that I turned it off, which I haven't done with a movie in years. Convoluted, over-complicated, this one was painful to watch. Too bad, too; it had lots of good actors in it, including John Lone and Luis Guzman.
Michael Clayton. Starring George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton, and Michael O'Keefe in a sweet little film about a 'fixer' for a big law firm. Good imagery, a slow but suspenseful plot, and great characters.
Ten Questions for the Dalai Lama. An incredibly nice documentary about a great man. Whether you like the Chinese takeover of Tibet or not (let's put it this way; Rico had a Free Tibet bumpersticker long before Richard Gere ever did), the Dalai Lama is a remarkable person, and high on Rico's 'would love to meet in this life' list.
3:10 to Yuma. Elmore Leonard novel. Western. Russell Crowe. Peter Fonda. Rico says check it out.
Shooter. This is what I watched when I couldn't stand War any more. Yes, it stars Mark Wahlberg. But the boy's grown up, and does great work in this film, along with Danny Glover, Ned Beatty, and Kate Mara. It's reminiscent of other set-up-to-take-the-fall movies, but is nicely done.
A good week for movie rentals.
