But what could you expect from a movie co-starring Tony Curtis which has the classic "Yonda lie the tents of my fadda" line, delivered in his Brooklyn accent. (Though the story was lifted from a novel by Nikolai Gogol, it was undoubtedly bastardized by Hollywood.)
But Yul Brynner was gorgeous as ever, and did a great job in an awful movie. Besides, he has a great line or two himself, including "There's only one way to keep faith with a Pole. Put your faith in your sword and the sword in the Pole."
Rico says they may have shot it in Argentina (cheap cavalrymen and lots of horses), but it sure looked like California and not a damn thing like Poland... (Though I belatedly realized that imdb.com does say it was partially shot on the Disney Ranch in Santa Clarita, California, so it's no wonder it looked like California. Of course, Santa Clarita doesn't look like that anymore, either...)
(The best part of the film, for Rico, was realizing that he and Taras Bulba now have the same hat!)
