History for the day: 1952: Nixon makes the Checkers speech



On 23 September 1952, Republican vice-presidential candidate Richard M. Nixon (photo, right, with Dwight Eisenhower) went on television to deliver what came to be known as the Checkers speech, as he denied allegations of improper campaign financing.


Rico says that didn't end his bad behavior until Watergate, thirty years later, when he made his famous 'I am not a crook' speech:
