History for the day: 1945: Indianapolis torpedoed

On 30 July 1945, the USS Indianapolis (photo, top), which had just delivered key components of the first atomic bomb, to be dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, to the Pacific island of Tinian, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Only 316 out of 1,196 men survived the sinking into shark-infested waters.
