On 23 February 1954, the first mass inoculation of children against polio with the Salk vaccine began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania:


The first vaccine (photo, top) was the inactivated polio vaccine, developed by Jonas Salk in 1955. The oral polio vaccine (photo, above) was developed by Albert Sabin in 1961. They are on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
