Civil War for the day
On 22 December 1864, Union General William T. Sherman sent a message to President Abraham Lincoln from Georgia, saying: "I beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah."
“Atlanta is ours, and fairly won,” declared Sherman when he captured Atlanta. Sherman had taken the South’s major manufacturing center and railroad hub, a huge loss for the Confederacy.
