On 26 June 1963, President John F.Kennedy visited a then-divided West Berlin, where he made his famous declaration: Ich bin ein Berliner (I am a Berliner).
Rico says it was a poignant moment, made all the more so by his poor choice of phrase; Ich bin ein Berliner actually, in the local dialect, refers to a pastry, not the city.
