Rico has been rewatching Waterloo (with Rod Steiger as a splendid Napoleon, and Christopher Plummer equally excellent as Wellington) and especially enjoyed the Prussian General Blucher's line as he arrived to put paid to the French:

"Raise high the black flags, my children. No mercy, no prisoners.

I will shoot the first man I see with pity in him."

Then, of course, Wellington had to sum it all up at the end:

"The only thing sadder than a battle lost is a battle won."
