Rico says he's been watching The Great Raid, starring Benjamin Bratt (photo, at right) as Colonel Henry Mucci, James Franco as Captain Prince, Dale Dye as General Kreuger, Joseph Fiennes as Major Gibson, and Connie Nielsen as Margaret Utinsky, about the raid that freed hundreds of POWs held by the Japanese at Cabanatuan in the Philippines.
It's a true story, alas, and shows all too well how rotten the Japs were to our prisoners; they felt that being taken prisoner was dishonorable, therefore they could abuse them without remorse. This is why Rico's uncle, who served in the South Pacific during the Second World War, would never sell parts for Japanese cars at his Napa auto parts store, and why even Rico (who likes them, and went to Japan for Apple, once upon a time) is wont to refer to them as pig-dogs... Even Rico's step-father, a kindly man who also served in the South Pacific, didn't shed a tear when, as one of the first Americans ashore in Japan following the atomic bombs, he witnessed their terrible destruction.
