The initial assessment of the FBI investigation into the sudden bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon shows evidence that pressure cooker bombs packed with shrapnel were used in the attack. The sudden explosions at the last leg of the prestigious marathon took three lives and left at least another 170 injured.
Details furnished by FBI Special Agent Rick DesLauriers at a press conference in Boston gave some information about several items had been recovered from the site of the explosions. One of these was a black nylon bag in which the device had been hidden; it was apparently a case of six-liter pressure cookers concealed in black duffel bags.
Use of such devices had been reported earlier from Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, as revealed by a July 2010 joint FBI and Homeland Security intelligence report.
Moreover, one of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker.
However, the Pakistani Taliban, which had claimed responsibility for the Times Square bombing, has denied any involvement in the Boston Marathon bombing.
The recovered items from the site of the explosion have been sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia for more detailed analysis.
President Barack Obama, while speaking to reporters in the White House, described the bombing as an ''act of terror", and added that it was still not known whether it was the work of any international organization, a domestic group, or a "malevolent individual".
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the investigation is proceeding to look at all possible angles and theories.
Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, has indicated that, as of now, there is no evidence that the Boston Marathon bombings were part of any wider plot.
A reward of $50,000 has been announced by the Boston police and firefighter unions for information that could lead to arrests in the bombing.
Rico says that the data originally came from theaustralian.com.au, but a pressure cooker in international terrorism? Who knew... (And, while searching for those really gruesome photos above for this post, Rico can only think of the Dilbert cartoon line 'Any pictures?' about someone 'literally blown apart at the seams', from a long time ago.)
