On 19 February 1945, during World War Two, some thirty thousand Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima, where they encountered ferocious resistance from Japanese forces. The Americans took control of the strategically important island after a month-long battle. The raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi led to the immortal photo by Joe Rosenthal and a statue:
