History for the day

On 16 September 1620, the Mayflower sets sail from Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers, bound for the New World. The colonists had been granted permission to settle Virginia, but stormy weather and navigational errors forced the ship off course. The pilgrims eventually reached the American mainland in November, and soon established the first permanent European colony.
