On 21 February 1965, former Black Muslim leader Malcolm X was shot and killed by assassins identified as Black Muslims as he was about to address a rally in New York City; he was 39.
Rico says he was startled to realize, while looking for an image of Malcolm X (above), killed when Rico was almost fourteen, to see this image (below) of what looked remarkably like Malcolm, but isn't (it's from an article about Malcolm X's legacy in The Atlantic):
