History for the day


On 18 January 1912, English explorer Robert Scott and his expedition reached the South Pole, only to discover that Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (the first person to reach both the North and South Poles) had gotten there first. They all died on the return trip. (See the story here.)
