An Iraqi police official says a handful of Christians and Shiite Muslims got into a dispute over decorations in a northern Iraqi town during their coinciding religious observances.
The official says Iraqi troops have been deployed to the town of Bartela, northwest of Baghdad, after three Christians were injured during the scuffle that erupted on Friday. The scuffle began after Christians preparing for Christmas Mass pulled down black flags hung in the town to mark the Shiite mourning period of Ashura, according to the official.
A provincial government official and a police chief are meeting with the two sides to calm the situation.
